Dark pervades the space around.

Hollows below the sockets
to wide hill of cheek.

I look up, rather than sleep.

In the series, “Flinch,” Lauren seeks the lost image of the self
in the elusive mystery of her face, her full form,
or sections of her body cropped into awkward close-ups.

In 2005, Lauren decided to “go public” with the pieces in Flinch,
inviting an audience of women to respond to the works
by confiding their own sense of insecurity and disturbance.
The result of such a request is a kind of agreement as to
the significance of the work.

My Country

When I was 19,
I slept in a cardboard box, lidded,
and waited for another mystery to unravel.

At 34, I gave birth to an eagle
who roosted in the hollows of my cheekbones.

At 58, I reconfigured the patterns of the ocean
and became a collection of small islands.

When I was 70, I held
the memory of my mother in my eyelids
and closed my eyes often for strength.

At 96, I reached my gnarled hands
to my sagging skin,
collected dreams off the dirty roads
and wished for peace.

Why Did I

©2006, threadwork on dyed and
layered fabric, 35" x 33"

dream about seduction first
       and divinity next
walk naked through my past
topple what I know
look to the new world
let truth shiver across
       make me weak
breathe in a devil’s bargain
swallow rapid gnawing fear
say it in green words
say yes to something I want
